Product Recommendations

From time to time, clients will ask us to recommend displays, backup hard drives, printers, and other technology that works best with their Apple devices. Here are our current recommendations (reviewed Winter 2024).

External Displays

You can find a wide array of displays that work with a Mac, with Apple’s Studio Display leading the pack in both features and price. It’s a 5K display that provides unparalleled sharpness at its standard pixel-doubled resolution of 2560x1440. There’s little direct competition, but Dell and Alogic offer more basic monitors with good display quality.

Note that these third-party displays don’t include webcams, so for video calls you could use an iPhone with Continuity Camera.

**Dell UltraSharp U2723QE 27" 4K UHD WLED LCD Monitor**
This high quality display is best for current Macs with USB-C. It can charge MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro 13-inch or 14-inch models, and the MacBook Pro 16-inch with the lid closed.

Home Networking

For a robust home or office network, we offer network installation services primarily using UniFi equipment. Contact us to plan, install, configure, and manage your UniFi network.

For a simple WiFi system that you may be able to install and manage yourself, we recommend Eero.

**Eero 6+ Wi-Fi System 3-pack**
For most homes, this 3-pack of Eero 6+ devices is a good start. With two built-in Ethernet ports each, they connect to network cabling installed in your home or to devices with wired connections, in addition to providing WiFi via Eero’s patented TrueMesh technology.
For even better coverage, consider the Eero Pro 6E.

**Eero Max 7, 1-pack**
This model supports homes with faster internet provider speeds, providing built-in 10Gbps network ports. Enjoy wired speeds up to 9.4 Gbps and wireless speeds up to 4.3 Gbps. Wi-Fi 7 technology can provide more than twice the speed of Wi-Fi 6 for greater capacity, less latency, and more efficiency on your network.

Printers

**HP Color Laserjet Pro MFP 3301fdw**
This HP Color Laserjet produces sharp text and vibrant graphics, has a relatively low cost per page, and supports 2-sided printing. It includes a scanner with sheet feeder for 2-sided scanning. It’s best for documents as laser printers cannot print glossy photos.

**HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M554dn**
This office printer for professionals prints consistently high-quality, 2-sided color documents – with strong security, high-speed performance, and smart sustainability.

External SSD & Backup Hard Drives

All Macs now use solid-state storage internally, and the pricing of external solid-state drives now makes them attractive as silent backups. SSDs also provide the ultimate performance for demanding workflows, and can be used for additional storage in limited circumstances. External Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) are only useful for Mac backup.

The Samsung T7 Shield Portable SSD is a fast, reliable, and durable external SSD available in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB sizes.

This backup drive offers 2TB, 4TB, 5TB, and 6TB sizes, works with USB-C on current Macs, and can connect to older USB-A ports too.

Backup Power

**EF ECOFLOW Portable Power Station RIVER 3**
Ecoflow offers a compact and powerful uninterruptible power supply (UPS) or battery backup that can provide several hours of runtime during a power outage, depending on the equipment that’s connected. It’s compatible with most generators or other alternative sources of power during extended outages.

This traditional UPS protects your sensitive network equipment and/or Macs from power interruptions including "sagging" voltage, brown-outs, and short power outages. It’s compatible with Tesla Powerwall and some home generators.

We've found this is the best performing and least expensive generator-compatible model.Note: it has a loud fan (because it's “double-conversion” so it's always running from battery to provide constant smooth power) – so it's not great in an office setting.
